These italian meatball subs make a delicious filling lunch or snack.

Perfect to serve up on the weekends or holidays when coming to and from sport or the beach. The kids (and adults) will love them!

The meatballs can be made in advance, and you can get creative by adding your favourite ingredients between the meatballs. Why not try a pizza style sub by adding capsicum and olives!

RECIPE:   ITALIAN MEATBALL & PEPPERONI SUBS

 INGREDIENTS

MEATBALLS

500g BEEF MINCE

2 Tbsp BACKPALATE FLAVOUR HOUSE ITALIAN SEASONING

1 EGG

1/2 CUP BREADCRUMBS

SAUCE

400g CAN CRUSHED TOMATOES

2 Tbsp BACKPALATE FLAVOUR HOUSE PIZZA PASTA SEASONING

 

VEGETABLE OIL

6 SUB ROLLS

PEPPERONI, SLICED

GRATED CHEESE

 

HOW TO:

1. COMBINE BEEF MINCE, BREADCRUMBS, EGG AND ITALIAN SEASONING IN A BOWL AND MIX WITH HANDS.

2. ROLL INTO SMALL MEATBALLS.

3. HEAT A DRIZZLE OF VEGETABLE OIL IN A FRYING PAN OVER MEDIUM HEAT.

4. ADD MEATBALLS AND COOK AND TURN UNTIL BROWN ALL OVER AND COOKED THROUGH. 

5. WHILE MEATBALLS ARE COOKING, COMBINE TOMATOES AND PIZZA PASTA SEASONING IN A JUG AND PUREE WITH A STICK BLENDER. (IF YOU DONT HAVE A STICK BLENDER, JUST MIX SEASONING INTO TOMATOES - YOUR SAUCE WILL JUST BE A LITTLE CHUNKIER)

6. WHEN MEATBALLS ARE COOKED THROUGH, REDUCE HEAT AND ADD PIZZA PASTA SAUCE INTO THE FRYING PAN TO COVER THE MEATBALLS. HEAT OVER LOW HEAT UNTIL READY TO SERVE INTO ROLLS.

7. PREPARE BREAD ROLLS BY CUTTING DOWN THE TOP CENTRE.

8. SPOON APPROX 3-4 MEATBALLS INTO EACH ROLL AND PLACE A SLICE OF PEPPERONI BETWEEN EACH. ADD A LITTLE EXTRA SAUCE IF REQUIRED AND SPRINKLE WITH CHEESE.

9. BAKE IN THE OVEN UNTIL CHEESE MELTED.
